We are excited to share about a new ethics team in Aotearoa, the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation. The Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation is a small team within the function of the Government Chief Data Steward (GCDS, more information: https://www.data.govt.nz/leadership/gcds/). A key part of the Centre’s work is connecting people in the data ethics and innovation space across Aotearoa and internationally. This network helps shape their thinking on a wide range of topics. The Center is currently developing a systems map and engagement model for connecting across our network.

Helping shape a collective understanding of data ethics and innovation in Aotearoa, the Centre:

  • Brings together and develops guidance and tools to enable the ethical use of data;
  • Acts as a network that draws on and leverages the knowledge and expertise of government agencies;
  • Supports government agencies with the integration of data ethics in relevant work programmes;
  • Provides visibility, advice, and guidance on data ethics;
  • Promotes public awareness and engagement of data-driven ethics and innovation

Our recent post about the Artificial Intelligence Researchers Association Annual Conference mentioned the panel session of “AI’s impact on society,” where Emma MacDonald from the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation was a panelist. She also gave a talk of “Data Ethics and Innovation: Practical Steps” in this event.
